sharpening stone 1000

So I am very new to sharpening and got a king 1000/6000 combo stone. I know you have to soak it but I heard that I shouldn't soak the 6000 side because it could crack. So should I only fill the container its soaking in with enough water to cover the 1000 side? Also I am sharpening a double bevel knife.
